You have to go all the way back to 1991 with Boyz II Mens Cooleyhighharmony to find a better R&B record. While you could name a dozen other artists in the modern R&B genre that are more impressive vocally, I doubt you can name 1 who has released a better record. What makes this record even more special is the fact that Jon B isnt a particularly strong vocalist. And while the other tracks on the record may not be as great as these are, they are all definitely listenable, and they help to move the record through its various stages of flow. "Dont say", "They dont know", "Cool Relax", "R U Still down", "Pride & Joy", "I do", "Let me know", "I aint going out".each of these 8 songs are the equivelent of that one great song you hear on most Contemporary R&B records. The late great rapper Tupac Shakur is featured on the track "R U still down", but it doesnt compromise the integrity of the record at all. Eventhough there are a number of tempo and theme changes throughout the course of the record, the vibe is consistent and highly enjoyable from start to finish. There are many things which make this record great, but the real genius of this record lies in the production. It is very well put together, and very well executed. It isnt a bunch of random hip hop tracks with chant-vocals and the hottest rappers of the time guesting on every third song, nor is it a record of "club bangers" with one or two ballads thrown in to fill the quota. This is one of the last genuine contemporary R&B records. One of the last genuine contemporary R&B records.
